Vanderbeekers of 141st Street book series

Vanderbeekers of 141st Street by Karina Yan Glaser

Review by Nathan:
The Vanderbeekers are a bi-racial family of seven in Harlem. With five kids and three pets (a rabbit, dog and cat) the house is rarely quiet.  Maybe that's why their landlord won't renew their lease.  None of the five Vanderbeeker kids: Jessie, Isa, Oliver, Hyacinth and Laney want to leave their home in the Brownstone.  They have until Christmas (eleven days) to convince their landlord, Mr. Beiderman, to let them stay.  Everything seems to be going wrong in their efforts, can the Vanderbeekers keep their apartment or not?

Review by Grace:
The Vanderbeekers and the hidden garden is about how they find an over-run lot and transform it into a beautiful garden in hope to lift their sick neighbor's spirits.   And Miss Josie (their up-stairs neighbor) is the one who got them to clean the lot in the first place. Then when they think all well they find surveying flags in the garden the Vanderbeeker kids think all is lost. Will the garden be saved?

Review by Grace:
When the inspector comes for Mama's Home Processor's License the pets are all over and more are arriving! Vanderbeeker kids can't get a lot to rent so their Mama can have a bakery. Will Mama have to go back to Accounting? I like these books because they are exciting and leave you hanging.
